SATURDAY CRAFTERS MARCH 18TH

At Saturday Crafters we are CRAFTING COMMUNITY!

Come out for a day away to work on your art and craft projects. Everyone here loves all sorts of arts and crafts, and you might just pick up a new one to try!

Here's the definition of community:

com·mu·ni·ty
a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

The importance of community:
Communities are important because they allow people to interact with each other, share experiences, develop valued relationships and work toward a common goal. Without communities, people would have to live isolated lives with minimal or no contact outside of their immediate circle.

Here are some ideas from the definition and importance I've picked out:

Common attitudes: the love of creating with our hands
Interests: knitting, quilting, crochet, painting, colouring, etc...
Goals: carving out time to create
Share experiences: learning new things, sharing techniques, showing each other projects we're working on
Develop valued relationships: crafty friends are the best friends - if you do a craft you'll never have a hard time finding a friend in the crafty community

QUILT SHOW ALERT!

Canada's Largest Quilting Bee
Are you making blocks or quilts for this? Here is a link to where to send your blocks and quilts https://www.canadianquilter.com/events/quilt-canada-2017-quilting-bee.php

Fresh Quilting
Have you heard about the latest quilting show on PBS? It's called Fresh Quilting! It is not being aired in Detroit yet, but here is a link to their website where you can watch episodes. http://freshquilting.com/ It appears you can only watch the most current episode online - I've liked what I've seen so far!

Crafty Tip of the Month: Libraries are a great way to check out crafting books before you make a purchase.

Saturday Crafters - Saturday February 18th

Happy February!
Saturday Crafters is coming up on February 18th and we want SC to be your warm and cozy safe place to come and craft the day away!  That's why I went with the coffee cup and mitten theme this month - this is how I want Saturday Crafters to make you feel - warm, comfortable and inviting.  Come out and see what we are all about!

Super Easy Receiving Blankets - demo at Saturday Crafters this month!
Vicky would like to teach anyone who is interested, how to make the Self Binding Receiving Blankets. She will be making some for the Windsor Ronald McDonald House.  If interested you will need to bring:
*two pieces of prewashed flannel - one square approx 40" and one square 30"
*coordinating thread
*pins
Vicky also suggests using the walking foot on your sewing machine.

Vicky will have some extra squares of flannel if you would like to make one on the Saturday for the Ronald McDonald House.

Words to live by this month:
Every person with whom I interact today will be affected to some degree by me.  I can persuade them, however slightly or significantly, to be kinder, happier, and more serene.  And if I happen to succeed in tipping the scales in the right direction, then I have made a positive difference in the world.  Christine Dallman

Yes! Another Yarn Bombing!
I have been following Kristy Glass Knits on Instagram (@kristyglassknits) and YouTube and she was inviting New Yorkers to join her in doing a yarn bomb for Valentine's Day.  I commented on her video and said, why not do a world wide yarn bomb for Valentine's Day?  She thought that was a great idea!  So here I go again, joining in with Kristy Glass Knits to do a world wide yarn bomb for Valentine's Day!!!! The theme is SHARE THE LOVE, #sharetheloveyb . So why not join me?!?! Would you like to knit or crochet some hearts and yarn bomb with me?  Or please go ahead, make some hearts and yarn bomb your own neck of the woods.  One heart or many hearts!  It just takes one yarny item to make a person smile - and that's what a yarn bomb is all about, making others SMILE :)!  Watch Kristy's video for some #sharetheloveyb inspiration!

Saturday Crafters - Saturday January 21st

Happy New Year!  Welcome 2017!

A new year and that means new crafting ideas!  We are only 5 days in and I have a list of 9 things that I want to make this year already!  Lists are good, especially when you can check things off.

Have you chosen a word for the year?  I've been hearing people asking, "what is your word for 2017", so it got me thinking after attending Christmas day church service - My word will be "Joy" (thank you Pastor Kim).  Even if you are not that happy and having a bad day, you can still be joyful - joy is an attitude that is in your heart, joy is hopeful that things will always get better, especially if you know the Lord.  So that's my word for 2017 JOY!

Speaking of Joy, there is a group in Windsor called Warm Wishes who is spreading joy with knitted and crocheted blankets and handmade quilts for seniors in local nursing homes.  Their goal is to pick a different nursing home every Christmas and give out a blanket or quilt to every resident as a Christmas gift.  Check out their website for more info http://warmwishesproject.weebly.com/ , I believe they meet every Sunday 2pm-4pm at the Superstore on Walker Road, but I would email them to make sure if you are interested in joining up with them.

I found a Canada 150 paper pieced block on the web if you are interested in making one in celebration of Canada's 150th birthday http://sea-sew.blogspot.ca/2015/04/canada150-quilt-pattern.html .

Attitudes to Live By
Compliment three people every day.
Watch a sunrise at least once a year.
Be the first to say hello.
Live beneath your means.
Be kinder than necessary.
Keep your promises.
Treat everyone like you would want to be treated.
Never give up on anybody; miracles happen!
Never deprive someone of hope; it may be all they have.
Pray not for things, but for wisdom and courage.
Be tough-minded, but tenderhearted.
Learn to show cheerfulness, even when you don't feel like it.
Remember that overnight success usually takes about 15 years.
Never waste an opportunity to tell someone you love them.

Saturday Crafters Notions

Words of wisdom from: #suzyquilts

My fellow creatives,

You are called to make.
That is the deep yearning inside you.

It will not go away. Not ever.
Tell the self-doubt to shut up.
Close the door.
Put down the phone.
Turn off the TV.
Make. Create. Conceive.

This will help your family.
This will help your spirit and your strength.
This will help the world.
Respond to the call to forge something
from nothing.
Tell your story through creation.
You are needed in this way.
You are needed. Simply make.

Interested in making a Simple Zipper Bag?

This will make a great little Christmas gift for someone you love! If you are interested in making one at the December Saturday Crafters please email me to let me know.  I will walk through the steps with you.  I have only made one, and have made some adjustments already and see that more adjustments can be made as I make another with you.  The cutting instructions attached in the email I sent, for the large bag, are pretty much correct and any further sewing adjustments can be made with those measurements as we make the bag together in December.  Please watch the video in the link below to see how it goes together.
